About us

WAVES is a academic research group affiliated with IMEC and Ghent University at the Department of Information Technology in Ghent, Belgium. Within the 5G exposure literature relevant for OUTREACH, our research is among the most impactful in the world. Together with our state-of-the-art simulation tools, your data is in the right hands.

A little bit of history

WAVES has decades-long experience with research of RF waves on humans.

We were the first to introduce state-of-the-art propagation methods coupled with exposure methods for 5G and beyond networks.

2019-2021

NEW REALISTIC EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT TOOL

Dr. S. Shikhantsov published a series of papers on hybrid Ray-Tracing/FDTD. For this, he won an award at the premier BioEM conference and published in the prestigious IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC)

2022

IMPROVED AND EXTENDED TOOL

Ph.D. student R. Wydaeghe improved and extended the method to 6G networks. He also won an award for this and was a visiting researcher at the IT'IS Foundation and Zurich MedTech

Our research

This is an non-exhaustive list of our relevant research works. These SOTA methods will be applied to your data.

  • S. Shikhantsov et al., "Massive MIMO Propagation Modeling With User-Induced Coupling Effects Using Ray-Tracing and FDTD," in IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, vol. 38, no. 9, pp. 1955-1963, Sept. 2020.

  • R. Wydaeghe et al., "Realistic Human Exposure at 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz for Distributed and Collocated MaMIMO in Indoor Environments Using Hybrid Ray-Tracing and FDTD," in IEEE Access, vol. 10, pp. 130996-131004, 2022.

What about funding?

Your data is valuable and we respect that. Therefore, we don't expect any payment for our collaboration as we are already fully funded through:

  • GOLIAT and SeaWAVE: two big international projects part of the EU's flagship Clue-H consortium, funded by the ERC as Horizon projects.
These projects focus on assessing RF exposure comprehensively with a high coverage.

  • ATTO and SHAPE: two projects exclusively for our university funded by the ERC and Methusalem. These projects focus on assessing RF exposure with high accuracy.

There is also plenty of budget for research stays available through the university, FWO, BioEM STMs, COST INTERACT STSMs, ...

Meet our Team

The research will be executed with realistic data by one PhD student under supervision of three prominent professors.

IMEC

WAVES is part of IMEC: an international research hub that shapes Europe's nano- and digital innovation often likened to players as ASML and Intel.

WAVES is part of Ghent University: a top-100 university worldwide and in Belgium with a crucial credo for OUTREACH: Dare to Think.
